Healthy bones, joints and muscles make it possible to remain active, complete daily tasks and maintain independence over time.

Bone and joint health are related, but they are not the same. Bones provide structure and store minerals while joints allow movement between bones. Muscles, tendons, ligaments and cartilage also contribute to stability and mobility.

Supporting this interconnected system requires more than one supplement or therapy. Regular exercise, adequate nutrition, healthy body weight, preventive care and appropriate treatment of injuries or medical conditions all play important roles.

Why Bone Health Changes Over Time

Bone is living tissue that is continuously broken down and rebuilt through a process known as remodeling.

During younger adulthood, bone formation generally keeps pace with bone breakdown. As people age, bone loss may begin to occur more quickly than new bone is formed. Hormonal changes, inactivity, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications and medical conditions can further affect bone density.

How Often Should You Strength Train?

A universal prescription of three resistance-training days per week is not appropriate for everyone.

Many adults can benefit from muscle-strengthening activity at least two days per week, but frequency depends on:

  • Current fitness level
  • Training intensity
  • Recovery
  • Medical history
  • Joint symptoms
  • Exercise experience
  • Goals
  • Other physical activity

Someone new to resistance training may begin with lighter resistance and fewer sessions. A more experienced person may follow a different schedule.

Rest and recovery are important because muscles and connective tissues need time to adapt.

What About Peptides for Bone and Joint Health?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that can act as signaling molecules in the body. Some peptide-based medications have FDA-approved uses for specific medical conditions.

However, the term “peptide” does not establish that a product can regenerate cartilage, heal tendons, rebuild bone or reduce arthritis pain.

Evidence-Based Care for Joint Injuries

Persistent joint pain or an injury should be evaluated to determine the underlying cause.

Treatment may vary depending on whether symptoms result from:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Tendon injury
  • Ligament injury
